This course has been designed to introduce mental health professionals to the general use of physical activity and exercise for the maintenance of mental health and an overview of the literature surrounding the use of physical activity and movement-based interventions for mental health issues. We will discuss the current physical activity recommendations for mental health, as well as domain and context-specific factors that contribute to translating physical activity into psychological well-being. Participants will learn potential biopsychosocial mechanisms in which physical activity and exercise could impact well-being, learn to assess their clients’ current physical activity level, and make appropriate recommendations for increasing physical activity as an empirically supported lifestyle change.
